  26. The most likely suspect is, again, the LAT service.  Let us hearken back to
  27. the good old days when there was the big computer and lots of terminals
  28. connected to it.  People could only type on the terminal, that's all.  So
  29. the heaviest traffic that could go from the terminal to the computer was
  30. human keystrokes, about 10 cps tops.  But one tiny command from a human
  31. could result in huge amounts of traffic from the computer to the terminal,
  32. like:

  36. This is the model upon which LAT is designed (and (parenthetically) also
  37. many other kinds of terminal servers).  It is not symmetrical.  File
  38. transfer in the terminal-to-host direction suffers.  It's as if the Long
  39. Island Expressway had ten lanes going into the city, and one lane coming
  40. back.

  42. I am not a LAT expert, so I can't tell you whether or how to improve the
  43. situation, but I am vaguely aware that DECservers can be configured every
  44. which way, perhaps using software called LATmaster, and maybe the buffer
  45. sizes in the two directions are among the items that can be configured.
  46. If so, then try making them the same size.
